The Future of Reality: Digital Culture, Artificial Intelligence, and the Sacraments

Tuesdays, March 25, April 1, April 8, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
St. Gregory the Great, Msgr. Klasen Building (1609 W Gregory St)
a course led by Joseph Vukov (Loyola University Chicago)
Our current digital age makes it increasingly difficult to live in reality. While human life is embodied, shared, and free, our 21st-century lives are increasingly simulated, individualized, and monetized. As we inhabit an increasingly virtual environment, the most human aspects of our lives wither. For Catholics the patterns of 21st-century life threaten to undermine not only human reality, but also our experience of God in the sacraments.
Are advances in digital technology intrinsically evil? Can a Catholic worldview help us preserve our humanity in the face of AI and transhumanism? Should we resist the use of technology and become luddites? In this three-week course, we will diagnose our current situation and consider what remedies Church teachings and tradition might offer us.
