Central to Christianity is the paradoxical claim that, not only does God love us, but also, as the first letter of John proclaims: God is Love. By loving God and our neighbor, we both imitate God's love for us and we partake of God's own being.
In this course, we will explore the various passages in the Old and New Testaments that spell out what that could mean. We will examine how the books within the Old Testament and New Testament agree with each other, and how they highlight different understandings of God’s love and God as love. We will also draw on some figures in the early Church to see how they interpreted this Biblical text.
