Art and Beauty
Tuesdays, June 4-July 30, 6:30-8PM
St. Gregory the Great Parish Center, 5545 N Paulina St
with Prof. Alfredo Mac Laughlin (St. Ambrose University)
Philosophers have been puzzled and fascinated by the mysteries of art and beauty since the beginning of philosophical thought. We call this area of philosophy “Aesthetics.” In this course we will survey various insights and theories acquired through centuries of thinking about art. These theories, we’ll find out, have also influenced the way in which people make art. Learning about aesthetics will help us understand a lot about art, and enjoy it more widely. In turn, this will give us a deeper understanding of the importance of art in every human culture, including our own.
